EPCH stated that exporters of handicrafts must ensure that they use certified wood to be competitive

According to the export promotion organization, UP Saharanpur exported 1,000 chlore worth of wooden handicrafts in 2020-21.

The Handicraft Export Promotion Council says handicraft exporters should know the importance of securing their business, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, and use only wood that has been verified to comply with global standards.

“We are witnessing very unstable times with the ongoing pandemic, hence it becomes very important to secure export commodities,” Rakesh Kumar, General Manager of EPCH for Exporters said at an awareness seminar for them in Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh.

According to EPCH, Saharanpur is an important wood handicraft cluster, with exports estimated at around Rs 1,000 crore in 2020-2021.

In a statement, the Alliance Insurance Brokers presentation explained how exporters can insure their businesses against risks. More than 100 exporters from the region took part in the seminar.

Kumar added that exporters must also comply with all requirements in order to establish the legality of the timber used.

Mechanical engineering exports to the US, China and the United Arab Emirates saw strong growth in October

“The EPCH scheme for assessing and verifying the legality of wood – VRIKSH – is acceptable in 183 CITES signatory states,” the statement said. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is an international agreement between governments. Its purpose is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not endanger the survival of the species.

Kumar also emphasized the importance of innovating products with the latest designs in accordance with global trends and forecasts in order to remain competitive in the international market. Courtesy: www.thehindubusinessline.com
