A lot of gorgeous, long curving lines in many designs, giving your furniture a contemporary feel, but this design seems to be very uncommon in traditional Indian furniture?

The scale of traditional furniture was different because it was constrained by space, which made it harder to see how the lines were expressed. Lines must meet exceedingly high aesthetic standards in traditional furniture. The design of many sorts of chairs, tables, beds, basin stands, and hangers, which integrate curve elements, are examples of this.

The market for Indian handcrafts is being expanded through the use of GI tags and numerous government initiatives. What impact do you think this will have on the wood working handcraft industry?

In a word, yeah. India is the home to various handicrafts and woven goods that make lovely mementos. When you purchase goods with GI tags, you support the weavers and artisans who are working hard to maintain these traditional products in the face of competition from mass-produced goods in addition to purchasing genuine goods.

How do you select the wood?

Well, it’s not like there was a large enough selection to choose from. We are left with no choice but to just stockpile whatever we can and then employ the components we have in accordance with our products. We are forced to use it for other short items since we are unable to sift the small pieces as we formerly could. The amount of wood is insufficient.

Can you tell us a bit more about how you choose the materials and what challenges you have encountered?

The majority of the artworks from various dynasties that can be found in museums around the globe were created using natural materials including clay, bamboo, wood, lacquer, rattan, etc. These organic elements are highly valued in Indian culture and exhibit a sense of aesthetic sensibility. Modern-day revivals of traditional materials have my particular attention.

What is your understanding of the combination of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design?

Traditional crafts are something that personally enthral me. Although I really appreciate it when life is calm and natural, I think that life is beautiful in all forms, whether it is rapid or slow. The fun of creating art, however, is lost if everything remains the same. I gradually started fusing traditional craftsmanship with modern requirements by painstakingly researching it in depth.

Environmental issues are more important now than ever. What does sustainable design mean to you?

Indian furniture places a lot of importance on the usage of organic materials. Although these materials are organic, healthful, and environmentally beneficial, it is challenging to properly utilise them. For instance, as natural wood can last for hundreds of years, it will inevitably shrink and vary with the humidity and weather. The materials that nature has provided us with must therefore be thoroughly understood, their nature must be grasped, and they must then be moderately and carefully transformed into a piece of useful furniture.
