AHEC takes center stage at the 125th National Hardwood Lumber Association Convention

India remains a ‘hot’ topic as more AHEC members look to expand their footprint in the country

The American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) made a grand appearance at the highly anticipated NHLA Annual Convention and Exhibit Showcase, which took place from October 4 – 6, 2023. In a momentous year marked by its 125th anniversary, the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) is once again spearheading the industry’s most illustrious event, converging the global hardwood industry’s luminaries at the prestigious Omni Louisville Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky.

At this year’s convention, AHEC delivered a crucial presentation on the first day of the convention. Of notable significance, AHEC contributed its expertise on global market access to the convention on the European Union’s Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), certification systems, and the overall environment for U.S. hardwood exports. Guest speakers included Phil Guillery, Rupert Oliver, and the AHEC Regional Directors. Whilst there was interest in markets all over the world, India was a ‘hot’ topic of conversation with many AHEC members looking to expand their footprint in the country.

“AHEC’s involvement in this year’s NHLA Convention will be of particular importance, as the global policy landscape affecting the trade in hardwoods is changing rapidly. It is crucial that the U.S. hardwood industry is ready for these changes and that market access for legally-harvested and sustainable-managed American hardwoods is not limited,” said Roderick Wiles, AHEC Regional Director.

The NHLA Convention’s 2023 program promises an enriching array of offerings, featuring industry specific education, distinguished keynote speakers, immersive hands-on educational demonstrations, and a bustling exhibition hall showcasing the latest technological advancements, products, and services catering to the hardwood business. Furthermore, attendees can anticipate an assortment of networking opportunities, fostering connections that transcend every facet of the hardwood lumber industry.

“All signs point towards another record year for exports of American hardwoods to India. Latest data released by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) show a 25 percent and 50 percent year-on-year growth in the value and volume respectively of American hardwood lumber shipped to India for the first seven months of this year. India has emerged as the biggest growth market for U.S. hardwoods in the first half of this year and we can see genuine interest from our members here at the NHLA convention, all of which bodes well for the future,” concluded Wiles.
