Furniture | French flair

In a market full of Italian brands, could there be space for a 163-year old French atelier devoted to ensuring that your furniture scores high in aesthetics and functionality? Turns out, there’s is. We are talking about Ligne Roset that opened its doors to a 5,200 sq ft space in Mumbai recently. Designed by architect Zameer Basrai of The Busride Design Studio and brought to the country by the Burgundy Brand Collective, the showroom comes alive with pink, grey, blue and yellow pieces.

“Luxury brand stores are very cold. We wanted to create a space that is warm and welcoming,” says Samir Gadhok, director and co-founder Burgundy Brand Collective, adding, “Besides architects and interior designers, we wanted homeowners to walk in and feel comfortable while browsing.” The cafe at the store, reiterates this.

With a room wise layout to help you easily conceive the designs at home, on display are living, dining, and bedroom furniture collections as well as wardrobe and storage systems, lighting, rugs, textiles and decorative accessories. Gadhok, who spent a year and a half stocking and sourcing the pieces, prides himself over having the largest selection of seating in the country. He is especially proud of the iconic pieces such as the Togo Sofa, Togo Atom (only 878 in the world) and Pierre Paulin’s Pumpkin, a 1971 seating design for the private apartments of the French president Georges Pompidou at the Elysée Palace.

However, that’s not the only thing that’s got Gadhok beaming. India now has the shortest manufacturing period in the world for Ligne Roset products. “Before we opened our doors the time frame was 52 weeks and now its 12 weeks, sometimes even 4 weeks,” he explains. So, if you want to bring home that ja ne se quois—a little something called flair, this is a French connection you shouldn’t miss.
